Make the Safe Choice

Take the rail-safety pledge for a chance to win a $100 Amtrak gift card

Railroad tracks connect the communities we call home. Whether you walk, bike, scoot, drive, or ride the train, a few simple choices can help everyone travel safely and confidently.

This Rail Safety Month, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and California Operation Lifesaver are sharing important safety reminders through original artwork by Southern California artist Clarissa of @sandiegopartybanner.

Take the Pledge

Know Before You Cross

No matter how you travel, remember:

  • Cross tracks only at designated crossings.
  • Follow all signs, signals, flashing lights, and crossing gates.
  • Never go around a lowered gate.
  • Slow down, put away distractions and look in both directions.
  • Wait until gates are fully raised and lights have stopped flashing before crossing.
  • Make sure there is enough room on the other side to clear the tracks completely.
  • Stay behind the marked safety line while waiting on a platform.
  • Trains may be closer and moving faster than they appear, and they cannot stop quickly.
  • Staying alert and following posted guidance helps make every trip safer.

A Reminder for Bikes, E-Bikes and Scooters

Bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters can make it easier to connect with Pacific Surfliner and explore the communities along the route.

When your trip brings you near railroad tracks or onto a station platform:

  • Slow down as you approach a crossing.
  • Dismount before crossing railroad tracks.
  • Walk your bicycle, e-bike, or scooter across the tracks at a 90-degree angle.
  • Dismount before entering a station and walk wheeled devices on platforms.
  • Keep headphones and phones put away near tracks and crossings.
  • Use handholds and watch your step while boarding or exiting the train.
